National Executive Committee

The Black Lawyers Association (BLA)
Elects National Executive Committee

On the 03 March 2018 the Black Lawyers Association (BLA) reconvened Elective Special General Meeting at Durban to complete the October 2017 Bloemfontein adjourned Elective Annual General Meeting. The adjournment of the Bloemfontein AGM was necessitated due to technical glitches which caused the delay in production of election materials.

The elections were conducted by the Election Institute of South Africa (EISA), which delivered incident free elections as all the observers declared the elections free, fair and credible. The newly elected NEC is mandated to lead the organisation during the transition period of the legal profession. The legal profession will, on the 01st November 2018, switch from its current four statutory law societies established in terms of the Attorneys Act 53 of 1979 to one unitary Legal Practice Council under the Legal Practice Act 28 of 2014. In the new dispensation both attorneys and advocates will be regulated under the authority of one regulatory body. The transition period will involve the transfer of staff, assets and functions from the current law societies to the new Council. The BLA’ new executive committee will make sure that the interests of its members and public are not compromised during this process. Geared to face realities of the future, BLA introduced new portfolios in the NEC being Head of Policy and Legislation; Head of Legal Education and Research; as well as Head of Events and Campaigns.
